Casket Robbery: Evolution of Evil

At its heart, this album has little hope and less light. The music regularly draws on serial killers, real and fictional, for inspiration. "Curse of the Night Stalker" covers the murders committed by Richard Ramirez and "Malevolent Milwaukee Massacre" concerns Ed Gein. "Pray for Death" reminds me of the scene in John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness when the characters trapped in an old church are told to pray for death by a colleague who is both dead and possessed. I don't know if the song references that film directly but the connection is cool.

The lyrical themes will appeal to those who like extreme music tinged with horror—as will the music. For the most part, things sound pretty good and the band clearly has a burning passion for the music. There's little here that avid listeners haven't heard before but what is here is pretty good. I'll be curious to see how Casket Robbery develops over the coming years. Check out "Annibelle's Hell."

Casket Robbery: Evolution of Evil

My Score:

Putting aside that Evolution Of Evil has a cover marginally less questionable than the original for Scorpions' Virgin Killer, Casket Robbery have achieved that most difficult of things and combined elements that usually prove tough to bring together and made an almightily convincing racket with them. Utilising a horror theme in the lyrics – to the extent that Corey Udler takes on a spoken role on one track – the Evolution Of Evil makes a cohesive statement that snarls and bites. "Annibelle's Hell" suggests out and out black metal, but from "Blood Bathory" it's clear that there's more going on here, thick grooves laid underneath the more expected extremities; something that "Malevolent Milwaukee Massacre" confirms. Therefore it's no real surprise that the influence of Pantera comes into play, but with vocalist Dustin Foesch much more an out and out growler and the melodic undercurrents much more discordant, it's something only hinted at rather than taken as full on inspiration. In fact when the double kicks blaze and the guitar solos buzz-saw into view it's possible to even pick out a Fear Factory side to this band's sound.

However Devildriver and Cannibal Corpse are more obvious touching points as "Final Chapter" or "Encroaching Darkness" reveal their inner torment and the band's raw aggression becomes clear. The other chief protagonist in this outfit is Cory Scheider, who also has ties with Luna Mortis, Epicurean and Echoterra, hence it's no great shock that there's a real assured confidence and class in the arrangements. This all too often overlooked aspect key in making "Undead Living Hell" and "The Asylum" as memorable as they are explosive.

Evolution Of Evil is a solid, if not always spectacular debut that certainly leaves the impression that Casket Robbery may be on to something rather clever here. Where they take their Evolution Of Evil next will be key in deciding just how much of a long term impact they make. The early signs are very encouraging indeed.
