Here we have the Metal Blade self-titled debut from San Diego's Poison Headache, a trio comprised of Andy Kukta (vocals/guitar ), Phil Sgrosso (vocals/guitar/bass), and Kyle Rosa (drums). These guys play what is commonly known as crossover, which is basically a mix of hardcore and metal, so expect plenty of attitude and thunder on these 10 brutal but brief songs. I say brief because most fall in the 2-3 minute range, many ending rather abruptly, which left me wondering a few times if something was actually wrong with my digital promo. No shortage of crushing riffs and lethal breakdowns to be found, like on "Conspirator" and "Sin Eater", supported by pummeling drums and guttural bellows & shouts. "Gray Skies" actually adds some atmosphere thanks to some textured guitar patterns, which offsets the massive riffing, something that also pops up again on "Benumbed". Probably the song that shows the most promise here is "Hail, Colossus" , a track that contains a wealth of groove to go along with those heavy riffs and angry vocals, and "Never.Again." is, well, just plain brutal.
Overall, a decent debut for anyone who has a penchant for metal tinged hardcore that doesn't pull any punches when it comes to fury and aggression.
