Long Escape, The: The Warning Signal

The Long Escape is a young band hailing from France. The Parisians released their first album Tryptych in 2011 and have since released their sophomore effort The Warning Signal in 2015. Members of the band include Kimo (vocals, guitars), Marius (guitars), Nicolas (bass) and Tom (drums).

Their sound runs along the lines of alternative and progressive metal. This is quite a heavy disc as its loaded with chugging guitar riffs that occasionally enter thrashier territory. The vocals of Kimo vary between a clean and melodic delivery to more intense growling and on the whole are quite well done. Although heavy, the band likes to incorporate moodier parts as often the music quiets down incorporating brooding atmospherics making for a more reflective listening experience. These sections are usually quite short as most of these tunes are in the four to five minute range. I suppose the general moodiness of the album might appeal to fans of Porcupine Tree but you need to remember this is a totally different beast than that band and much more into the metal end of the progressive spectrum.

The Warning Signal shows The Long Escape has a lot of potential as they will hopefully continue to hone their craft. Stand out tracks include the extremely heavy yet intelligent "Homo Weirdiculus" and the album ending "The Last Crying Man" where the music exhibits great dynamics as the band switches from intense growl laden soundscapes to prettier melancholic sections. An enjoyable metal disc and completely deserving of a very good 3.5 stars.
