Tears From Venere: Temporary Lives

Five years on from their formation and Italy's Tears From Venere release their debut full length effort, Temporary Lives. In essence what this band are about is gritty, attitude packed rock n' roll with a punk twist. Yes that's something that's been done countless times before, but with a sound rammed with energy and passion, let's not dismiss Temporary Lives prematurely.

The guitar pairing of Vincenzo Santoriello and Andrea Morelli are what this lot are really all about, each of the nine short tracks based around bouncy powder keg riffs, while drummer Matteo Rendina and bassist Simone Morelli keep it simple but effective. Don't expect rocket science here but do expect world weary lyrics tied to good time ideals. The results land somewhere around the edges of what Paw used to deliver, or what the extended Wildhearts family often produce (although not as refined…). In fact if I was to liken this album to any other recent release, then it would be 'hearts bassist Scott Sorry's superb When We Kings album. Although TFV aren't yet operating at those lofty heights.

As is often the case with Italian outfits, it's the vocals that kind of let the side down. Thankfully Santoriello (who also mans the mic) has a good grasp of English and any overly telling accent is kept pretty much in check. It's just a shame that his rasping delivery is pretty much a one dimensional weapon that seldom varies its attack. He's decent enough, but in truth, no better than that. Still, his contributions to the mid paced thwack of "Never Look Back", slightly more crafted burst of "My Name Is V" and full throttle Rn'R of the title track are sound enough, as are the songs themselves.

Tears From Venere are hardly likely to change the world but with a confident, assured take on the grittier but still melodic side of life, they do prove an interesting distraction as their admittedly well worn ideas take shape.
