Earth Ship: Reduced to Ashes

It's reasonable to compare Earth Ship to Crowbar—and many people do—but the band also sometimes kicks up influences that turn toward Kylesa or channel some of Mastodon's more recent musical moods. On this album, the band wavers a bit between the crushing power of the riff and the pull of melody. This is also true with the vocal performances. Some tracks are vocally rough and intense whereas others ("Red Leaves" in particular) rely on a slightly cleaner vocal style. I'm not talking about an alternating vocal style, the kind where dirty and clean vocals rotate. That sound doesn't belong to this band. Instead, the music uses a range of vocals, one that understands timbre and how it contributes to the overall musical sound.

This is Earth Ship's fourth release and the band is obviously feeling confident. Not surprisingly, the music on this album is heavily dedicated to the power of the riff. From track to track, the opening riffs give the music enough punch and verve to keep things going for the long haul. Even though I enjoyed the album from start to finish, it wasn't until the last half of the album that I lost myself in the music. "Castle of Sorrow" bursts with infectious energy. Another highlight was "Red Leaves," a track I've listened to at least ten times already. The opening riff on that track is nearly perfect and the lyrics (especially the line about "your demons whisper gently") are mysterious and engaging. Recommended.
