Robinson, Rich: Flux

Mostly well known as one half of the famous feuding brother duo alongside Chris in The Black Crowes, Rich Robinson has quietly amassed a solid set of solo recordings over the years that shows his superb guitar, vocal, and songwriting skills, and his latest for Eagle Rock, titled Flux is certainly no exception and might be one of his best. Staying true to his heritage, Flux is littered with catchy roots rock, blues, Southern rock, soul, and a touch of pop, 13 instantly engaging songs that are sure to thrill his vast fanbase as well as perhaps bring new listeners into the fold.

It all kicks off with the memorable "The Upstairs Land", a hook laden rocker with silky vocals, plenty of groove, and some tasty guitar work. The same can be said for "Music That Will Lift Me", another fine, accessible number featuring some guest guitar work from Blackberry Smoke member Charlie Starr. "Shipwreck" sounds like vintage Black Crowes, while "Everything's Alright" mixes '60s psychedelia with gospel and soul for a charming, warm sound. Shimmering, wah-wah laced chords permeate the funky "Eclipse the Night", another highly engaging, rocking tune with a ton of groove, and the stunning "Astral" goes into mesmerizing Grateful Dead-meets-The Allman Brothers musical explorations yet still features some killer vocal hooks. Toss in a few acoustic based numbers, as well as the sizzling blues rock of "Which Way Your Wind Blows" (featuring some incredible fuzz soaked guitar soloing from Robinson), and you have an album rich in depth & variety, containing a little something for everyone and a perfect new release for the summer season.
