Tyfon's Doom: Yeth Hound

Ever wonder what the bastard child of a secret affair between Paul DiAnno era Iron Maiden and Mercyful Fate would sound like? Well, look no further than Tyfon's Doom, the one-man project created by multi-instrumentalist & vocalist Tommi Varsala. Yeth Hound is the name of his new CD for Gates of Hell, a sub-label of the aways dependable Cruz Del Sur Music, and it contains nine tracks of vintage styled metal that will instantly take you back to the early 1980s. With a vocal style that is somewhat of a cross between DiAnno and King Diamond, though not nearly as good as either, Varsala instead draws his strength from his guitar and arranging skills, as tunes such as "Yeth Hound", "Rockers", and "Gate to New Reality" will take you back to the glory days of the NWOBHM. Some tasty riffs and weaving lead work permeate these songs, and though the production leaves a little bit to be desired, I'm guessing the muddy sound was partially intentional. "Got to Love the Midnight Meat Train" gallops along with plenty of intensity, and "Ravenous Hunter" takes its direct influence from those first two Iron Maiden albums but throws in some haunting King Diamond styled vocals.

All in all, Yeth Hound is pretty solid, but I'd love to hear what Varsala could do with a full fledged band around him. The drums are somewhat sterile here, so the inclusion of a real banger behind the kit could really do wonders, and if you throw in a fuller sounding production, I think Tyfon's Doom could really interest those into vintage metal sounds.
