Authur Vint & Associates: Through The Badlands
Originally from Tucson, Arizona, Authur Vint moved to Brooklyn, NY eight years ago. As a drummer he has played on over twenty-five recordings but Through The Badlands is his first as a band leader. Besides Vint the disc also features Ian Stapp (bass), Jon Cowherd (piano), Tony Scherr (guitar), Andrew Halchak (bass clarinet), Rich Perry (tenor sax), Yvonnick Prene (harmonica) and Blanca Cecilia Gonzalez (violin).
After living for almost a decade in the Big Apple, Vint has still not lost his Western roots, especially on the first two tracks. "Radford" begins the CD with a laid back groove mixing western country tones and contemporary jazz in a very pleasing way. Lovely sax and piano augments the melody while Vint propels the tune with his steady rhythms and earthy tone. The guitar solo has a southern rock vibe with clean soaring notes and excellent feel. As the music develops there is almost a languid jam-like atmosphere.. Up next is the title track with lively piano and harmonica invoking feelings of the Old West. This one includes some great cymbal work from Vint and Scherr's guitar is brimming with confidence as he delves into a south western sound. For more of a pure jazz feel check out the easy flowing "Heyoka" as the drumming takes on a greater complexity and the appealing "Sagebrush" highlighted by Stapp's outstanding bass.
My favourite track is the fiery "Kindling" where the band really amps it up a notch. The drums play a vital role here including an excellent solo spot. The rollicking piano and violin/sax interaction adds a positive vibe.
Authur Vint has produced a highly enjoyable debut that should appeal to jazz, western and even rock enthusiasts. Released on Ropeadope Records.
