DGM: The Passage

Now here's a new metal album to get excited about, that is the dynamic metal group DGM's eight studio album The Passage which is set to be released in late August. The band sure had to pull one out of the hat so to speak as DGM's prior album Momentum from 2013 was a stellar melodic progressive metal release, and to the Italian groups credit they haven't faltered with The Passage. If you go searching there are those praising this band, but It's hard to believe that despite how good DGM really are they aren't more widely recognised. DGM have released eight albums since commencing in 1997 yet Momentum was my first time hearing their material. I'm so glad that I did as a fan of Symphony X, Pagans Mind and many similar groups I was so hooked on that album. From what I can gather DGM has since gained added exposure so it's great to know that many more metal fans are also aware of this highly talented group.

There are some similarities with Symphony X and you actually can hear their masterful guitarist Michael Romeo blazing it up on the sizzling "Dogma". The other guest spot goes to Evergrey's lead vocalist Tom Englund on another power packed track "Ghosts of Insanity", sounding so good alongside vocalist Mark Basile who has such a striking and compelling style that complements that technical mastery of his band mates. The Passage sounds great thanks to guitarist/keyboardist Simone Mularoni who looked after the production as he also does so capably for many others. It's epic metal time as the album gets underway with the two longest tracks which are "The Secret Part 1" and "The Secret Part 2" and as to be expected the musicianship here is top notch, you gotta love that guitar sound and those wicked guitar/keyboard solos on part one that make you crave for more. Part two is slower and equally addictive display of DGM's progressive metal. Title track "The Passage" is shining bright also with more of that arresting solo component, "Daydreamer" is another of so many highlights on The Passage as DGM are rocking out with that super cool funk/metal sound. The album closes on a lighter note with Mark Basile's vocals shining brightly on "In Sorrow".

DGM have sure got it right once again and as a result The Passage is one of 2016's standout metal releases.

DGM: The Passage

My Score:

To put it rather simply, The Passage is an excellent release from this veteran progressive metal act. Instantly memorable melodies? Check. Soaring vocals? Check. Blazing, virtuoso guitar & keyboard work? Check? Intricate rhythms? Check. Heavy enough to satisfy metal fans? Check. If all this sounds like the making of a red hot prog-metal album here in 2016, the answer is yes and The Passage is without a doubt a must hear for fans of Symphony X, Pagan's Mind, Seventh Wonder, Tomorrow's Eve, and Poverty's No Crime. Expertly produced by guitarist Simone Mularoni and featuring guest contributions by Michael Romeo and Tom Englund, this is an album not to be missed.
