Way, Darryl: Myths, Legends and Tales

Many of you will be familiar with Darryl Way, former violinist and founding member of the '70s progressive rock band Curved Air. Since those glory days of progressive rock Way has continued to remain active in the music scene and has released a total of six solo albums, three in the last few years culminating with his latest effort Myths, Legends and Tales.

Way has chosen a loose running concept based on Greek Mythology as well as observations about the world, looking at the positive side of life. The tunes rock pretty hard and although this is not overtly progressive rock there are enough proggy touches here and there to satisfy that certain itch. There has been chatter on the internet that Way's voice is not in good form but I think he does an commendable job here. Sure his delivery his slightly monotone at times but he can still carry a melody and is in tune as far as I can tell. The first track "Apollo" is heavy rock with symphonic touches here and there most notably supplied by Way's always tasteful violin exploits. Dense layers of violin highlight "Orpheus and the Underworld" before calm pastoral keyboards offer a gentle reprieve. The up tempo "Whatever Happened" has a quaint English charm, especially the vocals and the soaring violin solo is excellent. "Strange Goings On" has a darker feel with dramatic rhythms and swirling keyboards whereas "Aphrodite" is a mellower piece with pretty piano and violin orchestrations.

It's not a perfect album by any means but considering we aren't getting any younger it is an admirable effort and one I am glad to add to my collection. Released on Right Honourable Records.
