Heavy Glow: The Filth & The Fury/Pearls & Swine And Everything Fine
Now hailing from Austin, Tx., Heavy Glow was started by Cleveland, OH. native multi-instrumentalist, Jared Mullins. Mullins then recruited Bass player, Joe Brooks, via a Craigslist ad in 2008 and the pair have since recorded two albums, two EP's and a single. Now their EP, The Filth & The Fury and their full length album, Pearls & Swine And Everything Fine are being packaged together into one and released via Restricted Release.
The Filth & The Fury was originally recorded in 2010 in one single, six hour long, live studio session that harvested five tracks that starts off this release. Heavy Glow are best described as an Indie sounding, bluesy-whiskey swilling, hard rocking, sludgy band with riffs that invoke the Hendrix/Free era filled 60's and the Garage Band mentality of the early 70's. Riffs are modulated, loud and brash while transporting you back in time when things where much simpler. Songs like "Bourgeois Baby" and "I Almost Prayed" and full of pent up melody and energy that would make the likes of Neil Young smirk a bit. The songs on this EP are unpolished and so is the production, which helps to capture their live angst.
The Full length album, Pearls & Swine And Everything Fine, features 10 tracks of a more polished nature that actually adds to Heavy Glow's sound. Production is much tighter, as this is actually a studio recording, as opposed to the Live recording of The Filth & The Fury. Pearls shows the band more concise and with more of a Radio friendly vibe throughout. Tracks like, "Look What You're Doing To Me" have an Alternative Pop flavor, with a very catchy chorus and "Mine All Mine" has a Foo Fighters kind of vibe to it with a Dave Grohl sounding vocal, while "Nerve Endings" has an almost a Queens of the Stone Age type of thump to it. All of the songs on the "Pearl" record are catchy with 'get stuck in your head' quality choruses and riffing. This isn't a '70's Sabbath riffing, but more like a MC5 meets the Foo's mixed with Royal Blood. Rhythms are tight, vocals are smooth and coercing and the songs are just plain entertaining. Hell, they've even got a song that is almost 70's Funk and for sure quite 70's R&B and very danceable ("Got My Eye On You").
Heavy Glow are a very intriguing band, to say the least. The packaged release of The Filth & The Fury/Pearls & Swine And Everything Fine is a great one from a band under everyone's radar. It should be noted that the modern "bible", Classic Rock Magazine featured Heavy Glow's tune, "Hot Mess" (one from The Fury EP) in its July 2010 sampler CD and Classic Rock mag is a pretty damn good barometer of upcoming bands! I found myself digging on the "Pearls" stuff a tad more than "The Fury", but it is all pretty damn good. Check out these guys, they are a good mix of 60's /'70's Stoner Rock and Blues Rock with '90's/'00's Alternative Pop sensibilities.
