Argentinian born Eden Bareket is an up and coming baritone sax player/composer who now lives in NYC. He has gained notoriety as a popular sideman and has just released his debut album as a band leader titled Choice. The rest of the trio consists of Or Bareket (double bass) and Felix Lecaros (drums).
Choice is an eclectic jazz offering featuring excellent musicianship and an overall sparseness in sound. The players excel at subtlety but the grooves are there, you just have to look a little deeper. Bareket is an excellent saxophonist as his playing traverses experimental tonal qualities and certainly has plenty of depth and feeling. The melodies are there but I wouldn't say this is catchy jazz as it definitely needs time to grow. On the album opening "Jenga" the sax slowly fades in and out along with Lecaros' complicated drums creating a faint yet defined groove. On "Raccoon" the bass is much more prominent and the saxophone and overall sound has an experimental edge. The sound is clear and crisp with Bareket hitting some deliciously low notes. When the music goes quiet the band's dynamic rhythm section can be heard in all its complexity. The title track is another exploratory offering as the music travels through calm and more chaotic soundscapes. Bareket's saxophone is an essential ingredient here offering an excellent solo. The same can be said on "Arguing With Myself" where his soloing is exceptional and is supported by the trio's rock solid rhythm section. "The Last One" is more subtle and reserved but no less interesting offering a variety of exploratory moods and scintillating sax runs.
Choice is a kind of jazz album that will slowly reveal itself over time as the melodies do not jump out immediately. This is more exploratory and experimental and there is plenty to digest in order to fully appreciate what this trio is all about. For those inclined to a more minimalistic approach and love sax led jazz, Choice should be a go to album in the months and years to come. Released on Fresh Sound Records.
