Savoldelli Casarano Bardoscia: The Great Jazz Gig In The Sky

Here is another huge risk, taking on one of the greatest selling albums in the history of popular music. Really, how does one improve upon perfection? The answer of course is you can't. The album in question is The Great Jazz Gig In The Sky by Boris Savoldelli (vocals, vocal noises, electronics), Raffaele Casarano (saxes, electronics) and Marco Bardoscia (double bass, electronics).

What is cool about this album is the artists put entirely their own spin on the music making for a vastly different album. This intense album is deeply entrenched in electronics and like the original should be listened to in one sitting as the songs flow together in a seamless manner. Weird talking and laughter sets up "Speak To Me" with moody electronics as a backdrop to the madness. "Breathe" is a little slower tempo than the original with the bass being the star of the show but also containing atmospheric sax and spacey electronics and effects. Other highlights include the lovely "Us And Them" where electronic pulses and eerie electronics meld with melodic sax and a fuzz laden guitar solo filled with off kilter dissonance. I did feel "On The Run" was a missed opportunity as the soundscape could have been developed much further, especially considering the artist's heavy and effective use of electronics. Still, really only one blemish on what is a very good album. If you enjoy jazz and Pink Floyd by all means dig in.
