Multi Storey: Crimson Stone

80's Welsh neo-proggers Multi Storey reformed in 2015 after a long absence and the result of their recent studio labours is number three Crimson Stone, the other two being 1985's East West and 1987's Through Your Eyes. Fans of classic British rockers Magnum may recall seeing Multi Storey in the flesh when they supported Bob Catley & Co on the 'Storyteller's Night' tour and they also played with Pallas and recorded a session for Tommy Vance's famous Friday Night Rock Show. Co-founders Paul Ford (vocals, acoustic guitar) and Rob Wilson (keyboards) focused on on other musical endeavours until resurrecting the Multi Storey name with new recruits Aedan Neale (guitars), Jordan Neale (drums) and Kyle Jones (bass).

For lovers of the 80's neo-prog movement and usual suspects IQ, Pallas, Twelfth Night etc there is much to enjoy here. Much of the album is like stepping through a door into 1983 and only the contemporary recording techniques place the album in the twenty first century. The retro-sound is aided significantly by Ford's voice that wouldn't sound out of place on songs by any of the aforementioned and there are also plenty of shifts in tempo, which is par for the course with tracks extending to double digits in length. The quintet are taking Crimson Stone on the road with several gigs lined up between now and the end of the year. And whilst the prog community may not have been waiting with baited breath for the return of Multi Storey this is an enjoyable enough listen by a clearly talented bunch of musicians.
