Serious Black: Mirrorworld
Mirrorworld is the second album by the melodic metal group Serious Black, an album which also sees some notable line-up omissions since their debut in 2015 As Daylight Breaks. That is with the departure of both guitarist Roland Grapow (Masterplan, ex Helloween) and drummer Thomen Stauch (ex Blind Guardian,Savage Circus). Now with Bob Katsionis (Firewind) on guitar and Alex Holzwarth (Rhapsody Of Fire) on the drums while the remainder of the line-up remains including lead vocalist Urban breed (ex-Tad Morose and Bloodbound), and so despite the changes Serious Black certainly aren't short of talented musicians. While I still really don't get the choice of the band name Serious Black the songs on their debut I surely did find agreeable, as they are again on Mirrorworld. If I was to compare the two albums then overall I do prefer As Daylight Breaks.
"Breaking The Surface" is the dramatic orchestral instrumental introduction, though I don't know what purpose this track really serves in the context of the album as it doesn't flow into track one but anyway it's there. This leads to the rocking melodic metal number "As Long As I'm Alive" which is nothing out of the ordinary but enjoyable nonetheless. The band really breaks out on the vibrant "Castor Skies" with the guitars and keyboards soaring along very nicely. "Heartbroken Soul" is the next track and it's another standout, this medium paced melodic rocker and the following track "Dying Hearts" will appeal to the fans of Pretty Maids and similar groups as will others on Mirrorworld.

Serious Black: Mirrorworld Posted by Pete Pardo, SoT Staff Writer on 2016-11-30 09:11:24 My Score:
Mirrorworld, the latest release from Serious Black, contains some very fine melodic rock/metal by this minor supergroup, and follows closely the formula started on their debut As Daylight Breaks from 2015. Though the band have lost two key members in Roland Grapow and Thomen Staunch, fear not, as Bob Katsionis & Alex Holzwarth have both stepped in on guitar & drum respectively, and not a step was lost in the process. Filled with both fiery, metallic rockers as well as catchy melodic fare, Mirrorworld impresses from start to finish and just reeks of class all around. Katsionis & Dominik Sebastian rips up some blazing solos and crunchy riffs on the energetic "You're Not Alone", and the incredible (and much traveled vocalist) Urban Breed shines on the addicting "Dying Hearts". Any Rhapsody of Fire fan already knows of the drum prowess of Holzwarth, and he really shines on the speedier, uptempo numbers here, like the raging, Deep Purple/Rainbow inspired title track, also noteworthy for some fine keyboard work courtesy of Jan Vacik, "Castor Skies", and the haunting progressive metal of both "The Life That You Want" and "The Unborn Never Die". Each tune here is pretty memorable from the initial listen, and while Serious Black aren't necessarily trying to rewrite the melodic metal playbook, from a songwriting & musicality perspective this is a mighty fine album and well deserving of two hearty thumbs up.
Make sure you investigate the AFM limited edition of Mirrorworld, which contains 7 bonus tracks.
