Emerson Lake & Palmer: The Anthology

To round out the initial wave of ELP deluxe edition reissues we have this new 3CD compilation titled The Anthology, which collects some of their best material from throughout their lengthy discography. House in a lovely casebound book package, the CDs are complemented by a lush booklet stacked with photographs, album cover images, and a complete history of the band courtesy of Chris Welch. If you've never experienced the wonders of one of the most influential of all the '70s British progressive rock bands, this is as good collection to get your feet wet.

Touching upon all the classic albums, such as Emerson Lake & Palmer, Tarkus, Pictures at an Exhibition, Trilogy, and Brain Salad Surgery, as well as material from their later, lesser known efforts, this set gives you a good cross section of their entire career, though, as you might expect, no songs from the excellent Emerson Lake & Powell album when Carl Palmer was briefly replaced by Cozy Powell. Just about all the hits, FM radio staples, and live favorites are here, including of course "Lucky Man", "Hoedown", "Still...You Turn Me On", "Karn Evil 9", "From the Beginning", "Knife-Edge", "Tank", selections from "Tarkus", "Fanfare for the Common Man", "Toccata", "Jerusalem", as well as Greg Lake's holiday favorite "I Believe in Father Christmas." The sound throughout is spectacular, and you also should know that the tracklisting here was picked out and approved by all three members, shortly before Keith Emerson passed away earlier this year.

So, along with the reissues of Emerson Lake & Palmer, Tarkus, and Pictures at an Exhibition, this anthology completes the first wave of BMG's ELP reissue campaign, with Trilogy, Brain Salad Surgery, and the live album Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends due later this year.
