Pahuuden äänet stands for 'voices of evil' in English, and it's the title of the latest Svart Records release from Finnish heavy psych act Seremonia, and fourth release overall. Talking the lyrical story of their previous effort, 2015's Kristalliarkki (The Crystal Ark) and sending it on a journey through space & time into a wild, space rock nightmare, the album from a lyrical perspective might be hard to follow for all you non-Finnish speaking folks, but musically, Seremonia have a knack for combining trippy Hawkwind inspired space/psych with a touch of crushing doom.
"Orjat" sees the band swirling the psych noodling amid some haunting vocals and the occasional fuzz toned riff, the lead vocals of Noora Federley as enchanting as they are mysterious. "Sielun Kuolema" and "Me Kutseumme sitaa" are blistering, fast paced hard rockers, while the band pull out their folk & psych influences for the textured title cut. The two lengthiest tracks, "Ne ovat jo taalla" and "Riivatut" both see the band veer off into spooky prog/psych/doom territory, loaded with creepy atmosphere and understated menace, the weaving lead guitars and synths battling it out as Noora's vocals float over the top of the nightmarish dirges. Some flute pops up on occasion throughout the album, adding a folky element to combat the distorted doom riffs and psychedelic vibe, especially on the dark "Riudut ja kuolet", one of the heaviest tracks on the album.
Plenty to sink your teeth into here for heavy psych fans, and while it's a good bet that Seremonia's style won't be for everyone, this is without a doubt an enjoyable effort from a band that does things their own way, and we are all the better for it. Chilling stuff!
