Now six albums in their career, the Swedish hard rockers Magnolia have once again delivered a satisfying platter of '70s styled music in the vein of Cream, Mountain, November, Cactus, Taste, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath. Pa Djupt Vatten is sung in their native language, just like their previous releases, but that shouldn't scare you off one bit as the vocals are quite nicely executed, slotting in alongside the thunderous grooves and scorching guitar riffs & solos. As always comprised of Ronny Eriksson (vocals, bass, acoustic guitar), Nicklas Bergsland (drums), and Jonas Andersson (guitars), with Mark Tholen guesting on keyboards on a few tracks, the band take the classic power trio format to the extreme, as thick, muscular heavy blues rock riffs permeate scorching tracks like "Ensamvarg", "Lev Verje Stund", and "Astronaut" with no shortage of swagger and attitude. Bergsland's powerful drums kick off the rumbling "Kan Du Forlata Mig?", one of the heavier tunes here with a dark & mean riff, while "Jag Ska Dra Ivag" has an almost ZZ Top styled raunch to it. It's UFO meets Black Sabbath on the menacing "De Stora Leker Krig", and kick ass bluesy heavy rock on both "Molnen Skingras" and "Lilla Vannen", the latter featuring some sizzling wah-wah guitar licks. The band also have a softer, folkier side, which you can hear on "Lugnet Efter Stormen" and "Brev Till Horisonten", but for the most part this album is chock full of bruising '70s styled bluesy hard rock.
Once again, another killer release from the folks at Transubstans/Record Heaven, who just continue to crank out new releases from so many great retro styled bands from Scandinavia. If you love vintage heavy rock, you'll need to hear this one!
