Ferium: Behind The Black Eyes

It used to be a novelty to say 'hailing from Israel', but now that phrase has pretty much become a byline to expect a healthy dose of the excellently executed unexpected. Ferium on the other hand are playing it much safer than that, straight up American deathcore hammered down with much force and little subtlety. In itself that's no bad thing, the 'excellently executed' expectation met with ease and yet for all the message gets across with no blurred edges and little in the way of confusion, the feel you've heard most of this before is pretty much inescapable.

The album revolves around the anguish, the pain, the sense of loss and utter despair that break-ups can provide, yet for all the genuinely well placed emotion, it never really comes across in the music. Variance is (although not often) offered up, instrumental "She Feels Like Home" an interesting idea, but the follow up, "Seven Years Of Seven Levels Of Hell", which meanders into view with piano and narration – the previous song's title, "She Feels Like Home" repeated over and over above those piano strikes and atmospheric percussion – simply feeling out of place and ultimately a track the skip button was made for.

And really there's not much more to Behind The Black Eyes, these two tracks the only where a strong sense of Suicide Silence or Pissing Razors or so many other bands isn't felt throughout. That doesn't make BTBE bad, it just makes it rather more uneventful than this style of music was ever meant to be. Ferium do what they do with conviction and directness, however once they've stopped, you're keen to move onto the next thing in hope of unearthing a little more individuality and variety than this extremely well worn script offers up.
