Armonite: The Sun Is New Each Day

Armonite is an Italian band which formed around 1996. They released their debut Inuit in 1999 and then for whatever reason took an extended hiatus but have returned with their sophomore effort The Sun Is New Each Day. Original members Paolo Fosso (keyboards) and Jacopo Bigi (electric violin) are joined by Colin Edwin (bass) and Jasper Barendregt (drums).

You may notice from reading above the absence of guitar. Often this could be an issue but here the band uses electric violin as a lead and rhythm instrument and Bigi does a great job as he is an excellent player. Often the violin and keyboards are used in tandem, each playing off the other adding a major component to the band's sound.

The disc begins with the somewhat frantic "Suitcase War" having an Arabic feel in the violin riff. The bass generates a deep groove and matches nicely with the song's general heaviness. "Connect Four" is another heavy offering with great violin and keyboard interaction while the upbeat "'G' as in Gears" is one of the catchier tunes. "Sandstorm" features a pretty tricky groove while the keyboards and violin wind their way through the soundscape. "Slippery Slope" travels back and forth between heavy and light with the heavier moments having an almost brooding feel, especially the violin rhythms.

The Sun Is New Each Day has turned out to be a rather nice surprise. It is eclectic yet catchy enough to garner wide appeal from those who dig instrumental progressive rock. Recommended.
