Asenblut: Berserker

Why is Asenblut's latest called Berserker? "The music of the title track gave us inspiration for the lyrics and the album title", founding member Tetzel explains. "The high pace, the heroic power and the energy of the song immediately lead to strong pictures that were followed by the right words mirroring the force and the madness of the berserker." Tetzel (vocals) is joined by, Claus Cleinkrieg (guitar), Yuri (guitar), Deimos (bass) and Balrogh (drums) and they cite bands like Iron Maiden, Amon Amarth or even Immortal and, as Tetzel continues, " we have moved on and indulged in songs that are a bit less progressive than before. In return", he adds, "the pace is higher and the songs are a lot more melodic."

If Manowar made Pagan Metal they would be Asenblut such is the overwhelming stench of power and machismo seeping through the confines of Berserker. There are riffs upon riffs and Tetzel's gruff vocals are somewhat reminiscent of Johan Hegg from Amon Amarth especially on "Helden Des Ewigen Sturms" which could rest nicely on any of the Swedish titans recent albums. It's very tempting to actually suggest that Asenblut are merely a German version of Amon Amarth but that's not strictly the case, bizarrely, the Germans are even less commercial that the Swedes although they certainly combine crushing heaviness with a well-executed sense of melody.

Asenblut: Berserker

My Score:

Classic Norwegian Viking & Death metal collide on this latest release from Germany's Asenblut, titled Beserker. If we were judging a book by its cover, the Amon Amarth-meets-Manowar artwork would lead us to believe what we have here is some war torn, battle ready, swords held high brand of Euro-power metal or Viking majesty, but despite some blazing lead guitar work, a boatload of riffs, and galloping rhythms, Beserker is some pretty hefty death metal at its core, tunes like "Titanenerbe" and "Drachenborn" providing for much brutality but also an incredible amount of melody. It's all quite epic but in no way overly accessible and formula driven as Amon Amarth's music can be, with top notch production and superb musicality. To top it all off, the vocals of Tetzel are lethal, his growls menacing and commanding, though the vocals aren't in English so for most of the world the lyrical messaging will get lost on us. Another solid release from the folks at AFM.
