Laramee, Pete: Chin Music
Pete Laramee is an American guitarist who formed Kurgan's Bane in 1994. He was inspired to play guitar after hearing Van Halen for the first time. His influences include Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and David Gilmour. Kurgan's Bane went on to release three albums, their last in 2005. Laramee also has four solo albums to his credit, his latest is titled Chin Music.
What we have are twelve baseball inspired instrumental rock tracks that are driven by Laramee's fantastic hard rock riffs and dynamic soloing. His fingerprints are all over this disc and his guitar playing is both melodic and intense but also calming when the need arises. Songs like the balls to the wall opening track "Opening Day" and the guitar-centric "Ryan Express" showcase not only Laramee's amazing fretwork but also his fine sense of melody. Laramee also mixes in some nice acoustic moments as in the melodic "Now Batting…" that features some prominent keyboards as well. It's not all ultra-fast riffs and solos as Laramee adds calmer moments like the soft to heavy "Mud Alley Midgets", kudos to Luis Nasser's fantastic bass playing, and the Spanish acoustic guitar in "Golden Sombrero". Intense walls of guitar riffs and soloing inundate the energetic "Dead Red" whereas "Attendance: Zero" is much more delicate at times but still packs one hell of a punch.
Guitar purists and melodic rock fans will be equally amazed at just how talented Pete Laramee is. This is instrumental rock music of the highest caliber. Recommended!

Laramee, Pete: Chin Music Posted by Eric Porter, SoT Staff Writer on 2022-03-19 15:10:59 My Score:
From the album cover to the song titles, Pete Laramee is a big baseball fan. Mr. Laramee obviously devoted a lot of time to his other love, the guitar. You are treated to smooth, gain driven guitar lines on this all instrumental release. Laramee also plays bass and keyboards on some tracks, and his brother Jeff is on the drums. Luis Nasser of Sonus Umbra (and an SOT personality) guests on bass, all of them were members of the Baltimore based Kurgan’s Bane. Dave DeMarco who played with Oblivion Sun contributes keyboards on the track “Circle Change”.
Laramee favors heavy rock guitar, playing smooth legato lines one minute, and straight ahead rock riffs the next. The guitar is the voice of the album, carrying the melodies of all the tracks. “Mud Alley Midgets” appears to be named after a youth baseball team, shows a lot of complexity, where the prior tracks were more rockers. The playing and compositional skills are raised to another level on this one. “Brouhaha” has cool vibe, clean chord changes back another fine guitar melody. “Circle Change” features tradeoffs between guitar and keyboard solos for a nice change of pace. Fans of heavy solo guitar will enjoy “Chin Music” from both a playing and compositional standpoint. There are plenty of interesting changes that running through the tracks to keep interest high. Play Ball!!
