Though many fans have been clamoring for an official live document from the '70s, there have still been a few solid live albums from the legendary ZZ Top over the years, including this latest Live! Greatest Hits From Around the World. Recorded at various stops 'around the world' during their 2015 tour, the track list is a bonafide selection of many of the bands most popular and memorable songs. Reportedly with no overdubs, the audio quality is very decent considering that these are all soundboard recordings, though there is a certain 'tinniness' on a few tracks. Overall, it's hard to argue the track selection, as many of the Southern fried, hard blues rocking classics are all here, including a rampaging "Cheap Sunglasses", and groove laden and heavy "Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers", as well as raucous renditions of "Got Me Under Pressure", "La Grange", "Tush", "Waitin' for the Bus", "Pincushion", and "Legs", among others. Good buddy Jeff Beck joins the band twice here, delivering a sizzling solo on "Rough Boy" and saddled up next to Billy Gibbons for a rousing, snarling take on "Sixteen Tons". Speaking of Gibbons, he's in fine form throughout, his scorching, fuzz laden licks, riffs, and solos bursting from the speakers, echoing a man half his age, as he tears through "Tube Snake Boogie" and "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide".
Taken from shows in New York, Las Vegas, Paris, Nashville, Los Angeles, Sao Paulo, Berlin, Vancouver, Rome, Chicago, London, and of course in their home state of Texas in Houston & Dallas, these recordings were literally taken from 'all around the world'. So for proof that ZZ Top can still rock with the best of them, look no further. Now, we can still hope that a vintage live recording from 1975 or so will reveal itself someday, right?
