Stepfather Fred: Dummies, Dolls, & Masters
Dummies, Dolls, & Masters is the third album from Bavarian hard rock act Stepfather Fred, a band with one of the most ridiculous names going today, but their music certainly makes up for their bizarre moniker. Basically a mix of alternative metal and modern hard rock, Dummies, Dolls, & Masters has enough going for it to provide a pleasing listen for anyone into heavy sounds, featuring a wealth of crunchy riffs, driving rhythms, and aggressive vocals. Is is the most original album ever made? By no means, but the band certainly give it their all, with tunes such as "Libertine", "Beat It", and "Lonely Toy" providing for plenty of heft and serious groove. "Relife" also has some massive riffing to go along with moody atmosphere, while "Shuffle Man", well, 'shuffles' along with some really catchy rhythms and juicy riffing. "Isolation" might just be the heaviest tune here, as a touch of nu-metal angst blends with their otherwise groove laden sound. The press info compares them to Pantera, Soundgarden, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and while I don't really hear much of any of them I can sort of see where those comparisons might come from. Overall, a fun hard rock record that won't win any awards for originality but pushes plenty of the right buttons to make it easy to recommend.
