Ellington, David: Marbles From A Drawer

David Ellington has been around for a long time but this is the first I have heard him play. The native of Connecticut studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston after which Ellington moved to New Orleans where he formed the Latin jazz band Chevere. He moved to Georgia in 2005 and has been there ever since.

Ellington plays a variety of keyboards including Wurlitzer 200a, Hammond a100 organ, Mellotron, Hohner clavinet and Yamaha C5 grand piano and is joined by Rick Lollar (guitars), Kevin Scott (electric bass), Mark Raudabaugh (drums), Coy Bowles (acoustic guitar, tambourine), Kevin Smith (upright bass), Aaron Trubic (bass) and vocalists Marshall Ruffin, Clay Cook, Bridget Kitson and Oliver Wood.

At its core Marbles From A Drawer is essentially a blues album with elements of country and bluegrass. "Soul Survivors" and "Bridgetown (Reprise)" are good blues tracks, especially the former with its playful piano licks standing out while "Fool" is more melancholic featuring the emotive vocals of Oliver Wood. Touches of bluegrass and country can be heard on "Annie", having an almost Dire Straits feel, I'm thinking their last album On Every Street, as well as the album's most poignant tune "98 Bottles" veering into country folk territory. This is by far my favourite tune on the disc.

Marbles From A Drawer is a nice little album that I will certainly enjoy from time to time when I want to hear finely crafted music from the heart and soul of an artist who emphasizes the 'song' first and foremost. Blues fans will certainly want to check this out as well.
