Recorded at their 2013 Euro festival headline set, Live Vol. 2 from legendary doom act Saint Vitus features the Lillie: F-65 line-up of Scott "Wino" Weinrich (vocals), Dave Chandler (guitar), Mark Adams (bass), and Henry Vasquez (drums). The band tears through a set of old and new classics in front of a rabid crowd, and while the recording isn't exactly perfect (I find the drums to be a tad too loud in the mix and kind of 'clanky'), the sheer power of Saint Vitus is still instantly apparent. Loads of heavy riffs and screaming wah-wah solos from Chandler are ever present on "War is Our Destiny", "Let Them Fall", and the lumbering "The Bleeding Ground", while the massive wave of fuzz that drenches "Patra (Petra)" turns what is an otherwise simple song into a perfect example of ominous, crushing doom. Wino's vocals might be a hit or miss for some people, as he basically just spews his lines, but his somewhat maniacal delivery fits the nature of the music, as he battles Chandler's booming riffs and wah-satured leads on the menacing "The Troll". The guys pick up the pace on the galloping, NWOBHM inspired "White Stallions", and close out the set with two of their deep catalog gems "Dying Inside" and "Born Too Late", each one dripping with fuzz and pounding drums.
Here you have it, quality live Saint Vitus, warts and all, basically a must hear for any doom fan out there. Bow to the power of the riff!
