The Infusion are a 3 piece avant-garde group. Red Horse is the second CD by this band and is supposed to create free-form soundscapes. Instead, it really is a poor attempt at being "artsy". I completely understand the free-form ramblings of Schofield and Metheny, but this isn't close. There is no sense of song structure, as the almost 13 minute title track introduces simplistic guitar tones with nothing else going on. Music that lasts between 6 minutes and 14 minutes (as the 4 songs on this CD do) needs to have some point in lasting that long.
The media blurb that accompanied the CD stated that the CD "builds with rhythmic complexities to create a powerful mesmerizing CD". If wanting to scream "what is the point of this song" is considered mesmerizing, then it has succeeded. Otherwise all this CD does is ramble in no coherent fashion. The songs (and it is a reach to call them that) do not even have the redeeming quality of containing masterful musicianship, which would have really helped. I find little on this CD that couldn't be done by hundreds of other artists, except they have the sense not to.
Free form music like this plays out better in a live setting then as a recorded version. Unfortunately I was given a studio CD to review. So if you are into avant-garde music that has no structure and is pretty "out-there", you may want to to give this a try, but you have been warned.
