Cathubodua: Opus I – Dawn

Here is another new band to cross my listening desk, this time in the form of Belgium symphonic metallers Cathubodua. The band formed in 2013 and is named after the Gaulish God of War who in Celtic folklore took the form of half raven half woman.

The players are William (drums), Sara (vocals), Katrien (violin and symphonies), Peter (bass), Roel (lead guitar) and Kenny (rhythm guitar).

There is nothing new under the sun here but this five song EP is quite enjoyable nonetheless. The short opening piece "Prelude" sets the stage with some dramatic violin and keyboard symphonics before the heavy riffs of "Scarecrow" bombard the listener in the style of Scandinavian heavyweights Nightwish and Sara's operatic vocals remind of their former lead singer Tarja Turunen. The riffs come thick and catchy and the bombastic arrangements will certainly appeal to fans of the style. The last track "Imperium Solis" has the band capturing a Celtic feel and the slight change up is indeed welcome.

Opus I is a solid effort and will hopefully spur on the band to release a full length album their next go around.

Track Listing:
1. Prelude
