The progressive power metal group Theocracy released arguably their best album yet with As the World Bleeds in 2011, and they certainly hadn't disappointed in the past with other great albums such as 2008's Mirror of Souls. Theocracy are soon to release their new full length studio album Ghost Ship which is also their fourth album and features more of those engaging melodic songs. Theocracy sure had their work cut out for them if they wanted to match or even surpass As the World Bleeds and whilst I don't feel that Ghost Ship starts out as strongly this is still one great album. Though it's not really surprising as it can't be easy to top the likes of "I Am" which is such a stellar melodic track, and don't get me wrong the prompt power metal opener "Paper Tiger" is really good. The pace is eased back for the title track although the tempo does vary, as they are on a "one way journey" aboard the "Ghost Ship".
Theocracy kick up a gear on the potent "The Wonder Of It All" with lively drumming, scorching guitars and Mat Smith's wonderful melodic vocals this is one fantastic metal track. Theocracy displays that consistency the band has presented us with in the past throughout Ghost Ship with ample variation. The album closes in style with a splendid epic titled "Easter", and given their track record with these songs of extended duration you just know it's going to be impressive and that it sure is as I keep going back for more and more of this moving song. Vocal wise Theocracy are always hard to fault and the guitar work on Ghost Ship is also of note fully loaded with addictive riffs.
Sure there's a religious component to Theocracy's material and if you've previously been put off by that side of Theocracy then you really should reconsider, Theocracy truly are a fantastic metal group plain and simple.
