Howling Giant: Black Hole Space Wizard: Part 1
Howling Giant are a transplanted Boston band now residing in Nashville. As you could probably tell from the album cover and cool band name, this is not a country album. Instead what we have is fuzzed out stoner metal with a bit of heavy space and sludge.
The young band includes Tom Polzine (guitar, vocals), Roger Marks (bass, vocals) and Zach Wheeler (drums, vocals) as well as guest musician Drew Harakal on organ.
The four song EP is inundated with riffs that are thick and fuzzy and mostly hard and fast especially in the burning "Dirtmouth" which attacks the senses in a bludgeoning and inescapable way.
The album opening "Mothership" is a melodic and spacey scorcher with some spoken word bits and organ filling in the seams. The sound is quite clean despite the heavy riffage.
The slower pace of "Clouds Of Smoke" is a welcome reprieve with pronounced organ and hazy acid burning guitar including a soaring solo that reaches for the stratosphere. The melodic lead vocals are a huge plus and bode well for the band on future efforts. Speaking of which, as implied by the album title, there will be more additions in the series and that is great news for stoner enthusiasts and metal fans across the board. Looking forward to hearing more from this young trio.
