Bädr Vogu: Wroth

With their second release, Bädr Vogu offers listeners an hour's worth of heavy, intense, and pessimistic new songs. Many of the tracks feature clips from various television shows (True Detective seems to be the most common one) that lend a pretty consistent theme to the album as a whole. On the closing track "Of Misanthropy and Malaise," these clips take on the larger role of samples, not only offering thematic unity but also taking on a rhythmic and musical sense. Even though some listeners may think this is a concept album, it seems more like a series of dark meditations on the state of the world.

Since starting in 2009, Bädr Vogu has had some lineup changes here and there. The current lineup is Sean Sokol (vocals, samples), Bryce Shelton (guitar), Leo Buckley (guitar), Justin Wonder (drums), and Chris Tanti (bass). Bädr Vogu maintains a relentless touring schedule but they took the time to write this album outside of the rigors of the road. The result is a solid and convincing sludge metal album. The band sounds amazing and the songwriting is strong. I especially liked "Deprogram," "Copernican Theory," and "Of Misanthropy and Malaise." If you haven't experienced Bädr Vogu, now is the time to check them out!
