Soft Tissue is the terrifying collaboration of Oakland 'larva rock' act Lament Cityscape (Mike McClatchey-lyrics, vocals, guitars, bass, drum programming, samples) and New York's blackened synth death miscreants Theologian (Lee Bartow-lyrics, vocals, synths / David Brenner-lyrics, vocals, samples / Gretchen Heinel- vocals/ Deniel Kauffman- synths), and they find the fruits of their meeting on the very capable Battleground Records. Containing six tracks of frightening intensity and nightmarish, apocalyptic sounds, one can safely say that Soft Tissue is not going to be for the weak of heart, but if you have an ear for heavy sounds that don't necessarily fall within neat & proper confines or categories, there just might be a spot in your heart for a recording of this nature. Howling vocals that seemingly are coming up out of the very furthest reaching caverns of the earth collide with repetitive rhythms, massive guitar riffs, and terrifying synth patterns, Soft Tissue is both a fascinating and disturbing listen. "Inevitability" might just be the centerpiece of all this cacophony, a tune that will clearly scare away the neighbors at full volume, but it's actually quite intriguing when you stop to think about how well the bands crafted all this musical lunacy together to make a piece this hostile yet rewarding. There are few moments of peaceful tranquility here, but even during the few 'quieter' passages the two forces manage to create an aura of tension and menace that just lurks beyond the corner, rearing its head with savage intent on the caustic "We Are All Barbaric Scum" or the downright creepy "Oh, Master".
It's not often that you can describe an album as truly 'terrifying', but Soft Tissues certainly lives up to that billing. Be afraid...be very afraid...and enjoy every second of it!
