Burnt Belief: Emergent
Burnt Belief is a project formed by Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree) and Jon Durant. They released their self-titled debut in 2012 followed by Etymology in 2014. They are back with a new release titled Emergent. Edwin (fretless and upright bass, programming, ebow) and Durant (guitars, guitar synth, piano, synth sequence, Rhodes) is joined by Vinny Sabatino (drums).
The music combines elements of Eastern, ambient, jazz and fusion in their own unique style of progressive rock. The music is richly textured and quite moody making this album ideal for headphone listening. The subtle electronics and effects are there but never as to take over the song. The guitars and synths are the real highlights here creating those moody atmospherics that I found to be very gripping.
There are some real cool tunes like the album's first track "The Bubble Bursts". The ambient-like beginning of synths and guitars is quite calm with an underlying layer of electronic programming. A pretty deep groove develops and the atmospheric rhythms are quite ear catching. "More Snow" is filled with stark piano, ambient textures and moody Eastern elements. "The Confidence of Ignorance" is one of the more vibrant pieces as the guitar synths are absolutely hypnotic. The title track is one of the longer pieces and it's a good one with enthralling guitar breaks mixing world, fusion and progressive rock to great effect. The longest track is "Turning Torso" featuring another deep groove and ethereal guitar stylings.
If you like your musical journeys to be sonically enriching and mood laden, I highly recommend Emergent as you will get a lot of mileage out of this one. Released on Durant's label Alchemy Records.
