Wright, Myles: The LA EP

Australian arranger and composer Myles Wright has a strong musical background having attended the Henry Mancini Institute in Los Angeles before heading to teach at the International College of Music in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia. His latest album The LA EP was released in 2015 and is in the classic big band style yet still keeping its modern acuity offering a totally refreshing listening experience. The album consists of three tracks with a running length of about twenty-four minutes but this is clearly a case of quality over quantity. You also get a Blu-Ray disc filmed in black and white of the band performing all three tracks in studio.

There are a total of twenty-three musicians including a massive horn section. The songs are vibrant and energetic but also involve more peaceful movements and the transitions between them are seamless and well thought out as are the segue ways to various solos. "Corridors" is the first track and it's a good one. A solitary horn intro builds before the full big band sound takes shape. A calmness unfolds before the intensity builds once again all the while retaining the band's strong sense of melody. The solos shine on "Choose Your Own Adventure" as sax, piano, trombone and guitar take to the spotlight. "Because You Can" is another vehicle for some great soloing which flows nicely and is a treat to listen to. The ending drum solo displays some terrific chops.

The LA EP is a sophisticated big band jazz album of the highest caliber as Wright's arranging and composing is first class. And the players aren't bad either.
