Auroch: Mute Books
I've really enjoyed Auroch's music ever since I reviewed From Forgotten Worlds, the band's debut album. I also had the opportunity to interview Sebastian Montesi (vocals / guitars) and enjoyed our conversation very much. I was initially drawn to the band because of the ways it draws on the influence of H. P. Lovecraft, but I also find Auroch to be one of the strongest up and coming death metal bands. Over the last few years, the band has released two more albums (including this new one) and has established itself as a powerhouse within Canadian death metal.
The new album features some of Auroch's best music, especially on its second half. I love the band's overall sound; I especially love the way the band employs tight and clean twin-guitar harmonies at just the right times. The guitar playing on this album is consistently solid and impressive. Zach Chandler's drumming is also most impressive. The vocals worked really well, especially on a track like "Say Nothing" where the band's two vocalists play off each other in effective (and sometimes frightening) ways.
I especially enjoyed the last three tracks: "The Keeping," "Her Bidding," and "Cup of Hemlock." The other tracks were terrific, but these three really stood out in terms of performance, sound, and energy.
Fans of brutal and mysterious death metal should enjoy this album. For me, it's one of the best releases of the year.
