Deranged: Struck by a Murderous Siege
Even though Deranged was initially influenced by Swedish death metal, the band has always gone its own way, developing a style that owes just as much to American death metal as it does to its Swedish roots. In particular, the band likes to blend technical / brutal death metal with grind and groove elements in ways that match its long-term interest in violence and gore. Many listeners will compare Deranged to Cannibal Corpse and other similar bands and the connection makes sense. This band has always focused on the irreverent, the violent, the horrific, and the disturbed. This style has plenty of fans and I have little doubt that this release will become essential listening, especially for those ready to hear more Deranged.
On the whole, the album offers few surprises, but the music is a little more varied than one might expect from this band. The songwriting is consistent with what the band has done in the past but the overall sound and style are effective. Fans of brutal death metal should find plenty here to enjoy. Check out "Cold Icy Hands," "Toy Box Torture Chamber," and the title track.
