Attention shoppers...ready to get your space rock fix for 2016? Well, it has come in the form of Vision and the Ageless Light from Columbus, Ohio four piece Eye. Comprised of Brandon Smith (drums, percussion, vocals), Lisa Bella Donna (organ, Mellotron, synths, guitars, vocals), Michael Sliclen (bass, percussion, vocals), and Jon Finley (guitars), Eye find themselves on Lasers Edge, a perfect home for their brand of spacey, psychedelic progressive rock. Fans of Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, Gong, King Crimson, Nektar, Deep Purple, ELP, and Black Sabbath will find much to sink their teeth into here!
Mellotron alert! Fasten your seat belts for the opening sounds of "Book of the Dead", a Mellotron lovers dream, as Lisa Bella Donna gives the old keyboard a complete workout and sets the mood of this album off to a great start. "Kill the Slavemaster" goes into Hawkwind & Pink Floyd styled space rock with a touch of ELP bombast, vintage synth, electric piano, & organ sounds colliding with sizzling guitars for a dreamy yet rocking good time. Speaking of rocking, "Searching" totally does just that, a heavy number dripping stoner, proto-metal, and classic hard rock vibes, as images of Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, and Monster Magnet come into play. Back to floating space rock for "Dweller of the Twilight Void", as lush acoustic guitars drift over haunting keys, taking the listener down Hawkwind/Pink Floyd avenue, which leads into the monstrous 27-minute closer "As Sure as the Sun". Here, masterful acoustic guitar textures and soothing vocals float above ominous Mellotron and oodles of synths, the peaceful tranquility holding steady for the full duration as the hypnotic guitar strums for the majority of the rest of the song until the Mellotron emerges once again and a wonderful synth solo takes us out. It's a pretty remarkable track, though there's a good 15 minutes where it's just acoustic guitar and vocals, which gets a tad tedious and might have made more sense to add some extra elements to break it up a bit. But it's a minor criticism on what is otherwise a pretty wonderful album.
The retro vibes that permeate Vision and the Ageless Light are just impossible to ignore, so if you are a sucker for vintage sounds that include classic analog keyboards and heavy riffs, this is an album you will want to add to your collection immediately.
