We've been following the Spanish hard rock band Eldorado over their last couple of releases, and their 2016 release Riding the Sun is now upon us, which continues on with the overwhelming promise heard on both Babylonia Haze and Antigravity Sound Machine. Recorded and mixed live in Brazil Studios this past August & September, the band tried really hard to capture the essence of classic rock bands from the '60s & '70s, and you can easily say that their goal has been achieved. The current line-up of Eldorado features Jesus Trujillo (Vocals, keyboards, acoustic guitar), Cesar Sanchez (Bass), Andres Duende (Guitar), and Javier Planelles (Drums).
Once again hinting at influences ranging from Led Zeppelin, The Who, Deep Purple, The Faces, Rolling Stones, Humble Pie, Frank Zappa, and Grand Funk Railroad, the band band seamlessly blend hard rock, blues, psychedelia, soul, pop, and prog throughout Riding the Sun, the 12 songs on display highly addictive and instantly memorable. Hard rockers like "Plastic Flowers", "Cosmic Radio", and the lethal "Gossip Crew" contain a wealth of kick ass riffs and Trujillo's powerful vocals, while the raucous title cut adds a dose of prog to the hard rock stew, weaving guitars and organ swirling around each other as the rhythms bob and groove in acrobatic fashion. "Looking at the Stars" has a bit of funk, "As It Should Be" blends ballady pop with '60s flavored psychedelia, and the addicting "Mother Water" bridges the gap between T-Rex and Rival Sons with its instantly memorable chorus and hard rock riffing. "She Rules the Sky" recalls acoustic Led Zeppelin, while the melancholy "The Servants" drifts along with elements of psych & heavy rock, almost like a head on collision between Iron Butterfly and Jefferson Airplane. These guys even do ballads well, especially the emotional closer "The Last Goodbye", which features trippy organ, acoustic guitars, and a fantastic vocal from Trujillo.
Though Eldorado clearly are going for a vintage, retro vibe here on Riding the Sun, there is so much variety to be found that the band keeps you on your toes from track to track, making for a highly enjoyable and engaging listening experience. This is without a doubt a band who the masses need immediate exposure to.
