Here we have another terrific unearthed from the vaults jazz recording, this time from 1959 in Zurich, Switzerland, featuring select tracks from two sessions from March 5th of that year of the Sonny Rollins Trio and the Horace Silver Quintet. For classic jazz lovers of the hard bop era, this is a release not to be missed.
Starting off with the Sonny Rollins Trio, who at the time were comprised of Rollins on tenor sax, Henry Grimes on bass, and drummer Pete La Roca, this set includes 5 tracks from the Radio Studio Zurich session (broadcast on radio) that sees the leader driving the compositions with his commanding melodies, however, it's La Roca who really steals the show throughout, especially on tunes "I Remember You" and "I've Told Every Little Star", where his rumbling & nimble drum fills amaze at every corner. "Oleo" features complex arrangements highlighted by some incredible walking bass lines courtesy of Grimes and Rollins' energetic lead sax, while "Will You Still Be Mine" is a sultry, sexy piece with some can't miss melodies from the leader soaring over intricate rhythms.
Next up, the Horace Silver Quintet takes over for five tracks of their own, recorded the same day, featuring the line-up of Silver on piano, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, tenor saxophonist Junior Cook, bassist Gene Taylor, and drummer Louis Hayes. Here, the arrangements are airier, leaving plenty of room for loose excursions of trumpet, sax, and piano, with "Nica's Dream" having a slight Latin jazz edge, "Cool Eyes" more of a big band sound, and the leader Silver really making his presence known on "Shirl" and the classy "Ecaroh", as his majestic melodies fire off alongside robust trumpet & sax. The 8-minute closer "Senor Blues" closes out the session in grandiose fashion, Mitchell's commanding trumpet lines setting the stage for Cook's alluring sax while Silver's piano vamps underneath alongside some intricate rhythms. Just a classic number that is sheer magic here.
Featuring a booklet filled with photos and info on the sessions, TCB (The Montreux Jazz Label) has put together a stellar package here of a classic jazz recordings from the vaults that will be a must have for any serious genre aficionado.
