Tower: Tower

Tower are a loud and garage sounding NYC band that has just released their debut, self-titled, 8 track record out now on THE END RECORDS. Their sound is a throwback of sorts to that raunchy and distorted underground Hard Rock of the 70's & 80's. Organic, powerful and grungy riffs are what Tower are about on this debut album.

Fuzzed out guitars are brazen and in your face on this debut Tower record and the vocals are as high and soaring as a kite and over bellowing from female Operatic screamer, Sarabeth. She sings SO high and SO often that the vocals become such a distraction that they are downright annoying. Imagine a Janis Joplin type mixed with 80's Metal Queen's Doro or Lee Aaron and have all three of them over sing just about every note that comes out of their mouths and then sing them as high as they can with an annoying fast vibrato. Her vocals do not help the fact that the music that she is caterwauling over the top of is bland and fairly forgettable. Songs like the Krokus sounding riff of "Raceway Rock" begins simple enough but falls short, but "Elegy" is easily their greatest hit complete with an Iron Maiden type harmony lead and time changes.

Tower seem to be known for their live shows, but this debut release leaves much to be desired. None of the songs jump out at you and in fact, they seem to all run together as one long, unsatisfying piece of music. As a whole, New York City's Tower misses the mark on this debut record.

My Score:

Tower are a 5 piece heavy metal band from New York City whose debut self-titled album for The End Records is now upon us. Led by the histrionic vocals of Sarabeth Linden, the band is fueled by a two-guitar attack that seems to draw inspiration from classic acts such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Scorpions, Black Sabbath, and Judas Priest. Twin guitars duel over energetic rhythms while Linden's Ann Wilson meets Pat Benatar styled vocals on steroids soar over the top on the heavy opener "Tower", a tune that sets the stage for this quick paced album. Sarabeth is again in your face on the hard rocking & catchy "I've Never Been More Alive", while the driving "Raceway Rock" instantly brings to mind early Def Leppard as well as Motorhead. The galloping metal doesn't end there, as "Party (Ready to Roll)", the riff heavy "Flames", and the KISS styled anthem "Hold On to Me" show the band penchant for memorable tunes that hit hard. While for some Linden's over the top vocals might overshadow the rest of the band, she's just so damn powerful, especially on the searing "Elegy", it's not hard to just stop and listen in awe of her commanding vocal prowess.

Overall, plenty of tasty early '80s styled heavy metal to dig into here from a band that seem to have a bright future ahead of them.
