Debut albums need to make strong impressions and this one generally does. The band, hailing from Australia, generally creates music that is punishing and oppressive by blending dark atmospheric elements with black metal songs. Similar things have been done before but Départe isn't just rehashing old sounds and styles. If anything, the band is attempting to find just the right balance between atmospheric death and black metal. I thought the best moments on this album were the slower ones, especially when they let the atmospheric elements breathe so that its sounds and spaces could create a sense of mystery and menace. Tracks like "Mara's Choir" do the most with such soundscapes. "Seas of Glass" does the same thing but it moves more quickly to the extreme metal sound of the rest of the album. "Wither" tries the most to blend the styles and succeeds for the most part. I didn't like the clean vocal section as much as I might have but the overall sound and feel of the track worked quite well. Overall, this is a solid debut from an up and coming band.
