Following suit of the recent re-release of the Led Zeppelin BBC recordings comes this stellar 2CD set (a deluxe version is also available with even more content) of the legendary Queen, recorded at various BBC sessions between 1973 and 1977. With 24 tracks, a great cross section of early Queen classics are included throughout these six sessions, going all the way back to their debut album and up to News of the World. This is Queen at their hard rocking, grandiose best, tearing through early gems such as "Keep Yourself Alive", "Liar", "My Fairy King", "Ogre Battle", "Son and Daughter", "Now I'm Here", "Stone Cold Crazy", and of course "We Will Rock You" among others. Sure, there is some repetition among the tracks, but its cool to hear subtle differences from session to session on such songs as "Liar", "Son and Daughter", and "Modern Times Rock 'n' Roll", a slightly altered guitar lick from Brian May here and there or a passage sung just a tad higher by Freddie Mercury. Most importantly, these versions of these songs rock quite hard, May's guitar riffs thunderous, while the lead vocals of Mercury, along with the bands backing vocals, are just soaring to the heavens. "Flick of the Wrist" is just as much heavy rock as it is majestic pop, while "Spread Your Wings" is just gorgeous, Mercury in full flight showing why he was one of the most beloved rock singers of any era.
The two CDs come housed in a dual digipack complete with a booklet containing photos and full info on the sessions. Sound quality is stellar as well, making this a worthwhile package for any Queen fan, a wonderful snapshot of the band as they were fully hitting their stride as one of the biggest musical acts in the world.
