An Autumn for Crippled Children: Eternal

This album, like most work by AAFCC blends black metal themes and sounds with atmospheres that are equally bleak and abrasive. Some listeners call this style blackgaze, a label that suits this album especially well. For me, this album shows an evolving side to the music. Even though AAFCC remains passionate about producing dark and rotten soundscapes, the music is slightly elevated and explores spaces that are surprisingly reminiscent of certain aspects of The Cure's sound around the time they recorded Faith and Seventeen Seconds. I realize that connection may be a stretch, but listen to some of the moods and musical settings here and you might hear more of what I mean.

I've never been a huge fan of AAFCC, but I have to admit that this is the most enjoyable album I've heard from them. It's also probably the most accessible of the bunch. The music is no less abrasive and withering, but it's reaching a little more toward the light.
