Into The Storm/Twingiant: 'Split EP'

This is a neat four track 'split' EP from Tridroid records, the pairing of upcomers Into The Storm, who made a serious racket with their Where The Merfalo Roam album (no, I don't know what a Merfalo is either…) on one side of this cassette (and digital) release, stoner-doom lords Twingiant on the other. This is my first outing with Into The Storm, however with both "Truck Van Trailer" (not a Dutch movie star I presume…?) and "Ghosthammer" lifted from the aforementioned Merfalo album, it won't be my last. Thick, gritty and dirty sounds erupting on the horizon as shouted in tune vocals claim the foreground. This is mighty metal that feels like Mastodon got all the nice taken out of them; technical yet brutal, sharp yet brutal and brutal, yet brutal. Cleverly Into The Storm are also a pinpoint operation dealing out nasty, precise sideswipes and it's no surprise those jarring jolts as brutally effective. Where are those damn Merfalo?

Twingiant on the other hand I am thoroughly acquainted with, these sludgy, doomtastic, stoner dudes already impressing with the albums Devil Down and Mass Driver as well as the Sin Hombre EP. But wait, stop the press… what's this? Unlike Into The Storm, TG's two tracks are new and the possibly prophetic "Formerly Known As" and "Poison Control Party Line" almost sound like a different band altogether from the Twingiant of old. Yes, the riffs are still huge and the vocals still shuddering and yet with a mid-paced gallop and rasping vocal adopted (admittedly after 1 minute 20 of shuddering guitar strikes) for "Formerly…", suddenly Twingiant are following a more rock based path. We're hardly talking mainstream here, but blow me if there isn't an upbeat groove going down. "Poison Control..." sits somewhere in between this new outlook and the old, a still mid-paced but more song oriented approach living long in the memory. Different, but I like it!

Two great bands, four excellent songs and a cassette deck? Sounds like party night in the 1970s, or of course you could be all fancy-dancy and get the new fangled digital fingmejigg. Either way, you won't be disappointed.
