Saturnalia Trio: Saturnalia XX – A Collection

Saturnalia Trio was formed in 1995 by Daniel Crommie (flutes and other instruments) and Leslie Grey (vocals, viola, violin) and later added Michael Treadwell (frame drums, tombek, percussion).

If you have listened to Crommie's solo works you will hear some similarities but the music here is much more folk oriented. Much of the sounds are of the Medieval and Renaissance periods as many of the melodies have a playful aura, almost gypsy-like at times. On the new album Saturnalia XX – A Collection the songs span twenty years of music and include remastered versions of previously released material as well as three new tracks.

As with all of Crommie's work, the album is well played and the melodies quite good. While there is nothing wrong with the music I did find myself tiring near the end of the album. That being said, if you enjoy acoustic folk music sprinkled with Medieval and Celtic flavourings and pretty acoustic melodies this album will give you a good overview of what this band is all about.
