I remember the first time that I heard Xandria's third album India in 2005 and I was so taken in, needless to say I have been a fan of this symphonic metal band ever since. Xandria are another to show there is more to female fronted symphonic metal than just Nightwish. Theater Of Dimensions is the latest and seventh Xandria album and follows a string of impressive releases. Like many similar groups the lead vocal spot is a changing one and this is the second album to feature Dianne van Giersbergen who joined in 2013, hopefully she sticks around as I really enjoy her contributions on that prior release Sacrificium and now with Theater Of Dimensions.
Theater Of Dimensions isn't starved for content with thirteen tracks including the enticing epic and theatrical fourteen minute title track which features a guest appearance by vocalist Henning Basse (Firewind, MaYaN). If you are looking for a major shift in direction with Xandria then Theater Of Dimensions isn't that album as the band continue down a similar path, but if you aren't then the orchestral metal of Theater Of Dimensions shouldn't disappoint. Standout tracks would include "Death To The Holy", "Forsaken Love", "Call Of Destiny"," When the Walls Came Down (Heartache Was Born)", "Ship Of Doom", the vibrant instrumental "Céilí" with an upbeat folk edge and "Queen of Hearts Reborn". I wouldn't go as far as to rate Theater Of Dimensions Xandria's finest album to date but it's still a very good release nonetheless to start this new year with.
