This is another nice surprise in 2016. The band is the power trio Arjun and they have recently released their fourth disc Gravity. This is the third and final album of a trilogy that began with Space (2013) followed by Core (2014).
In the band are Eddie Arjun Peters (guitar), Lamar Myers (drums) and Andre Lyles (bass). Guests include Jeff Coffin (flute on "Run), Cory Henry (organ on "Ascent") and Molly Cherryholmes (strings on "Gravity").
Let's get one thing straight, this album really rocks. The playing is tight and on point as the band has put together seven solid tracks of instrumental rock with the occasional jazzy flavour. I am discounting the second track as it is only twenty-two seconds long.
The lead off track "Prince" is all crystal clean guitar with just the right amount of reverb. The sound is pure and precise and the echo effects in the guitar solo is pure gold. Peters' playing is both soulful and emotive and while he can certainly play 'fast' his mojo is all about the feel and groove. "Run" is a little grittier and bluesier with some tricky rhythmic changes to reel in the prog fans as well as some outstanding flute work. On "Ascent" the raging organ solo is an album highlight as is the scintillating guitar solo in the catchy "Crossroad". The title track is another vehicle for Peters' to burn off some fantastic leads without losing his sense of melody. Just a great groove in this one. The otherworldly feel at times is courtesy of Chesterholmes lovely string work.
To put it simply, Gravity is excellent instrumental rock music that should appeal to fusion and progressive rock fans. To hear it for yourself check out the link below.
