Sylvan is a band that surprises you throughout their CD X-Rayed, and I can't think of any higher compliment than that. Certain bands may change styles effortlessly between songs, but when bands can create songs that flow and yet progress within the same format, that is always a pleasant listen for me.
The CD kicks off with "So Easy", an 8 minute sojourn that has it all. From haunting background vocals, to counter-themes running through it, to amazing vocals and a stunning guitar solo. And this is just the beginning.
The CD sometimes has an alt-rock feel, but then might move to a metal theme, and later play out a ballad style. But no song really fits any of these categories. The songs are true progressive rock that is unique. It is only slight hints that make you go, "that reminds me of something I've heard." And that may be the appeal of this CD. You are hooked because it sounds like something you know, but you listen often because it remains unique and surprising in what you find in the music.
I am a late comer to Sylvan so I can't comment of their growth, but X-Rayed is a mature and amazing effort. The instruments fill all spaces when needed and then lightly dance when appropriate. X-Ray is recommended to any progressive rock fan.
