Infernal Angels: Ars Goetia
This album's title comes from the first section of The Lesser Key of Solomon, a 17th Century grimoire that addresses, among other things, demonology. The Ars Goetia, for our purposes, is famous because it names almost a hundred demons. Several of those names are included on this album as the first part of every song. Even those unfamiliar with this tome will recognize some of these names; they form part of the larger lexicon of demonic names in popular culture. For the band, these names also signal a turn to more occult material. I haven't listened to Infernal Angels before now, but I trust the claim that this album is darker than previous releases, mostly because the music here is aggressive, disturbing, and extreme. The sound is mostly a heavy mixture of black and death metal.
I enjoyed this album, but I expected even more variation in tone and purpose. I'm not suggesting the songs are all the same, just that each name could potentially lend itself to some wildly creative songwriting. Nevertheless, this is a solid new release. For fans of Dark Funeral, Belphegor, and Mor Dagor.
