Lord of War: Suffer
Even with the quickly rising number of 2017 releases, I'm still going to write up a few reviews of 2016 albums that I missed or heard too late. One of those releases is the latest by Lord of War, an exciting band with heavy chops. I read one description of Lord of War as an atmospheric death metal band. That's only partly right. This is technical death metal through and through with only hints of atmosphere. There are some terrific nods to melodic music here, the kind that give emphasis to things. Most of the album is crushing and intense and very technical. The drums pound out time with relentless (and accurate) fury, keeping time with the madness lurking behind every beat, every note. The guitars, equally brutal, often take things into melodic passages that are engaging and strong. I especially liked the way these passages made songs like "Skin" even better than they already were. Fans of The Mummy (the 90s one!) will get a kick out of "Hamunaptra," a slightly playful riff on a melody from the film that quickly turns into something much more fierce. Of the many highlights here, I especially enjoyed "Manufactured Existence," "Carbon Based Genocide," and "Skin." Fans of technical death metal should enjoy this one.
